Animals, animals and more animals

We have been learning all about animals!  We began by working with the other grade 2 class.  Our job was to sort a bunch of animal pictures in a variety of ways.  We sorted them by the way they moved, what they ate, what they looked like and finally we sorted them by their similarities.  This led  us to realize that animals are classified into groups based on similar traits.  We then labeled the groups - birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians, and insects and spiders.  As a whole group we read a book about mammals and listed the traits of mammals on a chart.

Next we worked in our own classes.  We read a book about fish and Mrs. Metz's class read about birds.   We each recorded the character traits of our group of animals on a chart.  Lastly we partnered up and our job was to teach our partner what makes a fish a fish and a bird a bird.  Mrs. Betts and Mrs. Metz were very impressed at how well we shared our knowledge!

We plan on learning about insects and spiders and reptiles and amphibians next.

Do you have a favourite animal?  Do you know what group it belongs to?
