We started the week reading a book called, The Giant Pumpkin. While Mrs. Betts read the book we were using our visualization skills to make pictures in our head as to what was happening . . . The story was about a family who grew a pumpkin in their yard and as it grew they carved it into a variety of things . . . . a baby cradle, a double bed, a bathtub, house, a truck. It was amazing to see how each student visualized what that would look like. We talked about how good readers make pictures in their head to help them understand what is happening in the story.
Here are some samples of what we saw while Mrs. Betts read the story, The Giant Pumpkin!
it was a truck, a house and then it exploded and they all had a pumpkin party.
We also read a book called, The 13 Nights of Halloween. The way the book was written it reminded some of us of the book and poem called, "The Night Before Christmas." We made some text to text connections!
Wednesday was black and orange day. This started to get us really excited for Our Friday celebrations.
Painting our pumpkins! Focusing on the shades of orange . .
On Friday morning the primary classes took part in an Integrated day. We were put into family groupings and moved to 3 different station. We played Halloween bingo, made Halloween crafts and listened to Halloween music and read Halloween stories!
Earlier in the week we read a book about scarecrows and talked about the purpose of them. Then we painted our version of what a scarecrow would look like!
We also worked with our Buddies to create an art project based on the works of Ed Emberly's artistic style of drawing. We made Halloween silhouettes!
In the afternoon the whole school did the Thriller Dance, The Macarena and The Popcorn Dance! We had learned it in our music class with Mrs. Davis. It was so much fun!
A great time was had by everyone! A special thank you to our music teacher, Mrs. Davis for teaching us all the dances.
What wonderful artists there are in your class! ~Lisa
