Today in Math we played a game called, "You Complete Me." We were each given a card that had a number from 1-10 on it. We didn't look at it right away but when everyone had a card we had to try and find the number that when paired with our own number made 10. The first time we did it, it took us over 2 minutes. The second time we did it we managed to all find the number that completed us in just over 1 1/2 minutes!
After that we played another game called, Terrific Ten Snake! The object of the game was to get 4 of your own counters in a row by finding combinations that make 10. The first person places two counters on numbers that when added together make 10. Then it is the other person's turn. It took a lot of planning and thinking. We are learning to recognize the different formations of numbers.
We also read a few pages from one of Greg Tang's book, Math Fables, Lessons That Count! A great book for counting and learning about numbers.
The last thing we did was make a chart of the equations and combinations for 10 .We also talked about number formations and we realized that some formations of numbers are easier for us to recognize than others! We plan to practice our numbers using dot cards and dominoes next!
How do you practice your number sense?
